Demian Maia decided to finish up his training camp for UFC 109, where he’ll fight Dan Miller, with a visit to San Diego. His visit is linked to his desire to work with Rafael Alejarra, one of the top MMA Strength and Conditioning coaches in the industry.
Upon his arrival, Demian headed straight to The Arena Training Center for some No-Gi grappling/wrestling/striking training. Demian’s Jiu Jitsu/Head Training Coach, Wagner Motta, hand picked a few of the fighters from the No-Gi Jiu Jitsu Class at The Arena to work with Demian and then instructed them in exactly what they should be doing. Michael Bravo handled the focus mitts and put Demian through a great stand-up workout. Stephen Abas (2004 Summer Olympics Silver Medal in Wrestling) grappled with Demian, working on takedowns and passing the guard. And Jake Mapes, a Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Luis Heredia, worked Demian’s guard-pass defense.
Cris Cyborg was also at The Arena, preparing for her fight against Marloes Coenen this Saturday night at Strikeforce Miami. After Demian’s workout, Cyborg took advantage of the opportunity and asked Demian for some of his Jiu Jitsu insight. Both Demian and Wagner were happy to oblige and Demian worked with Cyborg for a good 30 minutes, trading ideas and working through techniques.
Late last night, Demian christened Rafael Alejarra’s new gym with his own sweat as Alejarra ran Demian ragged, preparing him for UFC 109. Rafael’s new gym is located behind The Arena training center in San Diego, next to the San Diego Sports Arena.
Today, Demian will train with fellow Bad Boy Fighter and Jiu Jitsu legend Alexandre “Xande” Ribeiro at “The Arena - University of Jiu Jitsu” - also located next to The Arena in San Diego.
